Downspout Drainage

Importance

Of all the problems that a foundation can face, more are caused by improperly managed downspouts than anything else. Time and time again we see foundations cracked and settling, and more often then not the cracks line up perfectly with where the downspouts are draining. The freeze thaw cycle, and continually wetting and drying the earth around the foundation causes a lot of damage.

Installation

Trenches are excavated, and commercial quality, solid wall drain Lines are buried underground. The downspouts are routed into this system. Clean-outs are installed, as the gutters catch all sorts of debris and funnel them into the underground system. Our catch basins and distribution boxes allow the sediment to settle to the bottom, and make an annual cleaning a five minute project. Our systems can be routed as well, though this will probably be unnecessary.

Discharge

The underground system often manages more than downspouts. It is often employed to discharge french drains, yard drains and channel drains as well.

The discharge is routed downhill and off of the property. Occasionally a sump pump is used or a dry well is dug.

System Components

Downspout extensions have their place in the overall water management plan of the property. Improper downspout drainage may cause the most damage, but they do not replace french drains, footing drains or a properly waterproofed foundation. Driveways might need channel drains and crawlspace need vapor barriers. Basement flooding needs to be remedied and basement drains installed if necessary.
